Thursday:
Left the house at 7am, and after a few stops for food and gas we arrived at the track at 2:30pm (450 miles). Try to find a spot, and after a few turn in the paddock we end up in a covered area, next to the tech area. We unpacked the trailer and the car and start to meet the people around us, after the registration was done I and Nicolas took the bicycles and went for a ride on the track to check it out. After my first lap at BIR (took us 20mn for the 3 miles road course with the bicycle) we went back to the hotel to relax a little.
Friday (test and tune, 4 sessions):
The day was sunny and dry. We met with Glen and family, he was there for the DE event and also Paul he was also doing the DE with a well prepared 78 red euro At the first session, I try to get accustom with the turn one, this is a high speed banked right turn that I took around 135/140 mph ( some other guys were must faster!). After a few adjustments with the tire pressure my best lap time were around 1:55.
Saturday (2 sessions, one fun race and the enduro 60mn):
The day was very cloudy with a chance of rain. After the first session, I rotate my tires around to even the wear, there is more right hand turns on the track and # 1 and 2 are killing the tires very fast. After the second session I found out that my front tires were finished, the cord was showing on the outside. I removed the wheels and took them to the Hoosiers truck to have two new S04 installed. In the afternoon was the fun race and everything was back to normal. At around 3:30pm was the start of the enduro, 60mn race with a mandatory 5mn stop. Right at the start it start to drizzle a little, not good. I was 24 out of 46 cars for the start of the enduro. The first 10mn were fine, no rain yet, but after 15mn I had a cramp in my stomach and had to make my 5mn stop early. After getting out the car I was somehow felling better, my crew (Agnes) check the oil and I get back in. Now at that time it was a fine rain falling on the track. Also since the main straight is a drag strip, it is very very slippery when it rains, in couple of occasion I almost get back in because of the rain it was starting to be very slippery at certain spot of the track. But I hold down to it and finished the enduro 20 out of 46 drivers. Afterward we spent the evening we Glen and family and Steve (94GTS) and his son Luke.
Sunday (warm up, qualifications, sprint race, Loonacy race):
The day was supposed to be rainy but we did not see a drop and even had sun in the afternoon. Since I was trying to conserve my front tires I just did 2 laps during the warm up and qualifications, but even by doing so I found out that my new front tires were dead again. The cost of two new front tires were enough for the week end. I went back to the Hoosiers truck found two new/used S03!! in there junk pile of tires and asked them to install those. I started the Sprint race 20 out of 20, ouch.., since they were much faster than me the sprint race was a little boring. Anyway I finished 16 out of 20 at the end with my best lap time at 1:52.( the fast guy were running 1:42) The Loonacy race was different. For the race (17 laps), the slowest car start first and they handicap you following your qualification time. I started the race 35 out of 43 drivers and after a really fun race I finished 4 out of 43 drivers (everything is on tape). I won a bottle of Champagne, we will have to drink it at the next Waukesha 928 get together. After the award ceremony we packed everything and left the track at 5pm and drove straight back home. The kids had enough racing and did not want to spend another night in the hotel, we arrived at Waukesha at midnight and this was the end of the racing week end.
